metal fragments in carbs, help!

After rigging a new T top, somehow small aluminum filings made their way to the Johnson 150 carbs. Obviously, thru the air intake/ cowling. After hours of figuring out what could be wrong, engine smoking excessively, could not hold an idle, and running rough.

Why is there no air filter/ or at least a microscreen to keep this from happenning just before the intakeor end of the cowling????????? Thanks

Where was the metal, in the carb bore or in float bowl? What year motor. Some 2000 had aluminum shavings on the float needle, when new on pre rigged boat.

The only way to know for sure is to take your carb off and check your reeds.
If you dont trust yourself with this, you should defenitely go see an OUTBOARD MECHANIC.
Good luck.

The fragments were in the float bowl. they looked like shavings from our drill bit. Which gets me back to the origional question. Air filter?

The motors are new, very new, almost brand new.

Bombardier's new sleek entrance for the air intake on the cowling seems to have a problem. Gravity will let almost anything get in there.
Ther 3 slits in the sides face up not back or down.

little pine needles etc could literally drop in there.

i believe the fragments we saw were from our handywork. once cleared from the bowls, the motor runs nicely, and the motor has never been pushed , and is propped out correctly. ( 4800 to 4900 rpm WOT ) and this was only done a couple of times for short periods during break in.

If the fragments were in the float bowl the ONLY way they could enter the float bowl is via the fuel line route! The primary thing you should do first is get a large fuel filter on the fuel line. If you were able to visually see fragments in the carbs then it is from the dust when you worked on the boat. They have made their way into the fuel tank too.

Sometimes the aluminum filings found in a fuel bowl are actually pieces of the screw threads that get cut when the screws are inserted.

If you want to screen the vents get some metal coffee filters and cut them up. They are a 500 mesh screen which is super fine and cheap too. Attach the screens on the inside of the cowling.

Bob

I agree with Bob VT, I do not see how shavings could get into the float bowl from the air intakes. Is this a new boat? If so, I would be installing a fuel filter-pronto.
