Mercury won't idle

I have a 1987 Mercury Classic Fifty S/N 0A996276 which has given me excellent service. This year on startup engine won't idle. Runs good at high rpm , but can't bring throttle back to center to engage shift without engine cutting off. Have changed gas and filter and cleaned bowl. Same problem. I'm thinking it might be time for rebuild of two carbs. Am I on the right track or missing somthing obvious. Any help will be most appreciated.

FISHAWKER,YOU SEEM ON THE RIGHT TRACK.CARB'S MIGHT BE READY FOR A REBUILD.CHECK AND SEE IF ALL CYLINDERS ARE FIREING ALSO.
