Hello, Im new to the boards here. I just recently purchased my first boat! 1984 Champion bass boat. It has a 1982 Mercury 90hp on it and im having some trim issues with it.. The trim motor is running fine and all when the toggle is pressed but nothing happens.. Its filled with fluid and is at the correct level, still nothing. I did however notice the right cylinder leaked alittle bit after cycling the toggle up and down. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Mercury tilt/trim problems

Well, here is some more bad news..I took off the hydralic line on the right cylinder to see if the pump was even making an effort to work and to make a long story short i ended up cross threading the line into the cylinder and breaking the cylinder..So now off to find one of those. I didnt see any part numbers of any sort or anything on it. Anyone have an idea on finding one?

Re: Mercury tilt/trim problems

I'm guessing you have the model with two cylinders and the pump located in the boat?

If so, those cyls are scarce but they do come up for sale every now and then. Check ebay, craigslist etc. My understanding is that those cyls were all the same from the late 60's thru to the mid 80's.

When you operated the pump, did you have the valve screw turned fully CCW?

Yes it was turned ccw..I tried both ways. Im beginning to think the cylinders leaked down and needed to be blead. So i eneded up finding one on ebay for 50 bucks so i geuss when it gets here will see. Thanks for responding!
Do you know the proper way of bleeding the cylinders? Any help would be awesome!

Pony there are two bleed screws on each cykinder. They need to face up to bleed. To bleed them, fill the pump with 5W-30 motor or if your existring fluid is red, dextron III ATF.

Open the starboard top bleed screw and run motor in the down direction. Oil will shoot out. Wait for all air to be expelled, and then replace plug. Repeat for port cylinder.

Now remove cylinder from motor and face up bled screw up. This screw is next to where both lines connect. Run motor in the up dirction and oil will shoot out. Wait till all air is out. Repeat with other cylinder.

Refill pump.
