I have a mercury OTO11788 125HP model 1125412wd. The remote control is the 88688a26 with integrated tilt switch in handle.

Issue : engine all of a sudden start to come up after a few minutes or longer sometimes.
I think it is and issue with control switch since I disconnected the tilt switch in the engine.

I have read a number of post but I am still not sure if I can replace the switch in the remote control in an 888688a26 unit. Has anyone done this before?

I am not able to remove the switch at the top of the T and was not sure if integrated into handle or how to remove the cover over the switch. There are now screws and I tried to prior cover off but it does not seem to budge.

I think it could also be a possible short in the line where if possible the voltage builds up enough to trigger the up side of the circuit.

1. has anyone replace a trim switch in the 88688a26 control handle?
2. do you replace the whole handle?
3. could it be a short in line that will eventually feed power back to the up relay?

looking for thoughts and advice on how to trouble shoot this.

thanks

Toggle switch on handle? They can get water in them, which completes the up circuit. See if you can blow it out with some wd-40 or equivalent.

I just found this if anyone hits hits this issue. YouTube video on removal of cover on throttle handle to replace switch.

I used heat gun to loosen end cap and remove cap with putty knife. (narrow blade). Expect to replace end cap. The cap did not come off but broke 3 of the 4 blades connecting base to the cap. Purchasing new end cap on amazon and trying switch part 87-8m0046008.

The old switch had some corrosion when I took it apart. Looked like the outer gasket on switch was pushing down on the contact since it had broken down and stretched out. I cleaned the switch and put it back with out the gasket and the tilt works now. I will replace with new switch and cover.

Mine was/is doing the same thing. Before I used a dremel tool disc to cut around that cover and get the switch out. After I got the switch out I lubed it up and it seemed to be ok so I put it back. Big mistake, the problem came back. I should have replaced it with a new switch. Should not have cheaped out like that. That switch must be a poor design or selection by merc since this seems to be a common problem.
