Mercury throttle only button

I have a 1987 135hp Mercury OB. Serial number OA957847. The controls on it are Quicksilver single control mounted on the console. The problem with it is the throttle only button does not work all the time. It should just push in when in neutral and I should be able to move the control handle forward to have faster RPM when cold starting. Once started and warmed up and the contol handle is put back into neutral the button should come back out. When I take the button out there is a shaft that the button must push in on but other than that I don't see how the thing operates or what to do to fix it.

Re: Mercury throttle only button

I have the same controller in my boat and must admit that it acts up sometimes as well. I made the mistake of opening the controller at one point only to be presented with the complexities (for a non-mechanic) inside! You may be able to fix the shaft that disengages the throttle arm lever, however, just a warning - when you open the controller up try not to cause more issues like I did! I'm sure someone else on this forum can help you more - just my 2 c's of warning...

Re: Mercury throttle only button

If the throttle is the one im thinking it is, try unscrewing the top cover of the lever(the 2 screws are underneath) and look at the trigger(the thing you hold in to push the throttle back and forth) it sounds like it may have broken inside, there should be a steel wire that locates into the trigger, when the trigger is pulled it moves the wire that moves the pin down at the bottom of the throttle, ..a new trigger is about 4 dollars
