Mercury starting problems -stator

Before I finally order a new Stator for my motor, the workshop manual tests for the Stator, has shown it to be faulty causing my motor not to start.

But somewhere else I've read, that if the rectifier is disconnected and the motor starts, then replace it.

My question is, why should this stop the engine from starting. Although I've not tried this yet as I cannot get access due to the tides being wrong to try it.

Terry,

Can't see a faulty rectifier stopping an engine from starting! If you have access to a multimeter you can test the rectifier easily.

I assume that you're not getting any spark. One simply check that most people overlook is the kill circuit. The way these engines are stopped is by 'killing' the ignition by grounding a terminal on the switch box. Usually the first thing I check on an engine with no spark. I remove the orange or black/yellow wire (depending on the year) from the switch box and check for spark. It's on the centre terminal of the row of 5 on the switch box, between the reds and blues. If you now have spark, then you're chasing a grounding problem, or a keyswitch problem. If still no spark, then at least you know it's not the kill circuit.

Chris...........

Re: Mercury starting problems -stator

Hello
I have a similar problem with a merc Out Board 1973 850, it will run sometimes then not start the next time, getting me stranded on the water. The fule is OK, as the new tank and hose assy is showing the plugs are wet. , I know its electrical, but don't know where to start.

How do I post a Question??

I am a newbie

Thanks AJ

No fire to plugs. Can you bypass ignition switch by disconnecting plug and jumping solenoid to see if you get spark at plugs, negateting kill switch?
