I have just bought a 1995 Rinker Rocket with a Mercury 120 Sport Jet. The starter will not turn the engine over fast enough to start. I removed and disassembled and found black burnt wire on armature. The starter solenoid was also bad. I have a starter ordered but the lady I bought it from said the starter was replaced just a couple of months ago. Is there anything I need to look for that would cause a starter go down that soon? I tried to turn eninge over with a rope and in seems to have good compression. and when I remove the plugs and tuned engine over. It had good fire at spark plugs. What should I do as for as maintance before I put boat into the water and is it o.k. to hook a hose to the water intake hose and run engine out of water? I would also like to buy a service manual. There is a lot offered on-line. Which is the best? Been on the lake all my life but this is my first jet boat. Will it hurt anything to tow this boat behind my house boat. I think I posted this on wrong forum. How do I delete it or change to outboard forum?

Re: Mercury sport jet

you re in the right forum here , so many companies sell cheap starters that you cant look for an underlying problem until you replace the starter , then read the top thread page in this thread and post results that apply to you . Yes you can tow it without a problem

Re: Mercury sport jet

Shouldn't be a problem towing the Sport Jet. I tow my SJ90 behind my cruiser all the time (adds a lot of drag, but when you're in a cruiser, who's in a hurry?). Mine is used as the 'Pet Jet' to take the dog to do his business while the big boat is at anchor!
