Hey all,:):D

I have a mercury sport jet 175XR2 S/N 368XXX. It had been mothballed for years and as of this writing, has only 20 hours on it. I was using it all day on a Friday, and I went to start it up on saturday and it ran for about 20 seconds and died. I opened the hatch and found the following:

A bolt and washer in the bilge that had come loose and fallen out.
The bolt and washer went to the bracket holding the ignition plate on.
There was a ground wire that was held in place by this bolt.
The ground wire went to the switchbox assembly.

The insulation on the stator connecting plugs (Yellow wires) showed signs of overheating that I had not seen before, but I never really looked that closely before troubleshooting this issue.

Using a screwdriver inserted into a removed spark plug wire, I quickly discovered that I didn't have any spark.

While cranking the engine, I did see voltage from the stator, but I wasn't using the right type of meter apparently.

I bit the bullet and took it to the shop for a diagnostic test and all they could confirm was that the Stator was bad. They gave a price of $600 installed for the stator and said that once it was replaced, they could check the trigger, and voltage regulator, pcm, etc. They said that they had no way of testing the other items before they replaced the stator. That was the end of the conversation because I can buy a new stator myself for $200 (Their price was $75 more) and install it for Free (I just saved $400 on that alone). I'm planning on buying a new trigger plate and just install it while I have the flywheel off.

Am I on the right track? What's the best way to troubleshoot this stuff on a budget? I'm also going to get a shop manual for this model that may have some troubleshooting tips and tests.

Any help with this would be GREATLY appreciated. I can't wait to get back out on the water!

Thanks for the link Fazbullit! I'm going to download the manual right now.

I need to know everythingg about this engine because I plan on keeping it for a long time. I have read that I need the RED stator - great information.
Check out the 12' boat that this thing powers - Look for it on Facebook, just type in "Sonic Jet Delta". It's an awesome boat.

The shop I originally took it to said it was a bad stator. I downloaded the manual, and tested the stator according to the instructions and it checked out fine. The trigger, on the other hand didn't check out as well. Thanks to the idiots in the shop!!! I should have just tested this myself first. They would have charged me coming and going I just know it!!!:mad::mad:

Read the rest of the manual. Pay close attention to what happens when the switchbox is not grounded.. Can't believe the shop didn't catch that if you told them the same thing you told us in the first thread.

The trigger supplies about 2v to trigger the switchbox (hence the name trigger). Unless it is somehow destroyed, it's rare to have all three coils fail. Each coil supports 2 cylinders. 1 = 1,4 2 = 2,5 3 = 3,6.

If both swithboxes blew then that would support the no spark to any cylinder theory other wise there is no possible combination of trigger and single switchbox that would cause no spark on all cylinders if the trigger has at least one firing coil.

Have you pulled the flywheel off and checked the key/keyway to make sure it's not sheared. If the flywheel is out of alignment you can have a no spark or very weak spark condition and timing will be off.

100% correct but the SJ uses the plastic 18495 switchboxes trapped between ignition plate and you see more trigger failures on these(SJ) than a OB motor and it does not have a key to shear under flywheel....

Re: Mercury Sport Jet 175 Just quit

Thanks for the help guys. I will read the manual now that I have it. I can see that my suspicions about this shop was justified. They're just looking for some sap who doesn't know that they are doing. The $130 minimum was for one hour labor. That covered the "Stator test" which I know now took about 5 minutes. I asked what the comprehensive details of the diagnostic service were and they said "Bad stator, and the results of the compression test were 'good'". Now, I'm no genius, but a shop telling me that the compression test was "good", means that they didn't really do a compression test, other than manually rotate the flywheel and experience resistance. The results of a compression test on a 2-stroke engine would be "#1-110psi, #2-120psi, #3-110psi, etc." I bet they didn't even pull a single spark plug, which means that they didn't really do the test and they were flat out lying to me. This statement doesn't bode well for their reputation. My findings on the stator confirm this fact. I think that the disconnected ground wire is the smoking gun. The trigger isn't as expensive as the stator anyway. I'll continue to push forward on resolving this. Look at my youtube video to see how this engine operated just before the failure:(

Dang, bombardiered again... LOL. Why didn't they just stick to the Rotax's and leave our Merc's alone!

Re: Mercury Sport Jet 175 Just quit

Update:

After looking at the shop manual, I carefully re-checked the stator, and the trigger assemblies and got some strange results. I bought the flywheel puller (Great investment) and put in about $500 worth of parts (New stator, and trigger), and Bam! Thing fired right up. It is now my mission to become the expert in the SJ-175 so I never have to go to the shop again. Thanks for all your help!

Sound like for a new motor someone was either messing with it or trying to steal it or part on it !I would check every wire and bolt on the engine reatach all lose wires bolts etc please report back with your findings

Re: Mercury Sport Jet 175 Just quit

why did they have to replace a stator to check it?
