I have a 1995 mirage jet boat with a mercury sport jet 120. The boat and engine have been great for the last 8 years. Now all at once I now have a no spark condition. I would like to know if someone (from experience) thinks it is a stator, voltage regulator, rev limiter, or switch box problem. We where wake boarding and turned the engine off after a minute or two of idleing. Then tried to start it back up (after about 3 minutes) with no luck. The engine cranks and we tested and found no spark. I also tried disconnecting the emergency shutoff switch with no luck. I have read that I can try disconnecting the rev limiter and the rectifier. I am also going to look at the stator for damage. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank You,

Steve

Well..where do we start. I assume you have the Mercury ign.

Its a hard to diagnose...with the help of a DVA meter you can be sure what has failed. But as you probebly do not have one, we are left to guess.

If you have the Black Stator on your engine...IT WILL FAIL eventually. So you can save yourself the hassle and try that first. If it does not clear up the problem...you will have to change the pack. And you will not really be out any money for as I said before the Stator WILL fail.

TMD

Thank You for the info. It sounds like the stator has been the problem in most cases.

Check out my website in my signature for more info on diagnosing the Sport jet "no spark" condition.

Ken

first things first...unplug the rev limiter an see if you have spark...then worry about a stator...

I had almost the exact same problem on my 1999 Sportjet 175 (See my post) I'm in the troubleshooting phase of this even after paying a shop $115 to diagnose. They said the stator was bad, but couldn't tell if that was it.

How you get a "DVA meter" (Digital Volt Amp?) for the stator.

I should probably pick one up!
