Mercury Shifter on a 77 18` Starcraft. How do I get it to split?

I have this shifter connected to factory wood that I want to replace with
aluminum for the inside drivers side panel. I can`t seem to figure out how to
get it apart. I took the "SETSCREW" out and then all the bolts around it to
separate the two pieces but to no avail. It all seems loose but absolutely will
not come apart. The shifter is connected to a 79 1/2 Mariner 115 T of P. It`s
black and has writing on the front that says "Advanced Throttle Only" on a
circular part of the handle and a Gray and black faceplate that says Mercury <F
R> and smaller writing around the cutout that says STARBOARD MOUNT 37-827289-14. I have not touched the front because it looks like there`s no way to take it apart from the front (button or handle)
I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me figure it out before I
break it. Thank You...Randy

Having had a 3000, look on the underside of the control lever large round "base" (putting the lever at WOT and looking at the bottom round part from the rear allows you to see): At about the 5 O'clock position (with the lever in N) is a hex allen set screw. Removing this screw is supposed to allow you to pull off the handle and thus allow the halves to separate......but don't hold your breath. I had to saw mine off (the whole handle) with a recip saw and metal blade to get mine apart. Replaced with a current model 2000 for about $250 off iboats and it's night and day. Love it. However. If you replace with another 3000 ok. But if you go to the 2000 it mounts ON the bulkhead, not in it and you have it sticking out and so are the control cables....they aren't behind the bulkhead like the 3000.

The reason I bought the 2000 was for the fast idle lever. Having to jiggle the control lever while you hope you get the black button pushed in just didn't appeal to me. I put it on a 12 year old alum bass boat and asthetics weren't a consideration.

That is possibly a Commander 3000 remote control.

Here is a link to a large file of the Mercury Controls. You will see the Commander 3000 in Section 4g.

Thank You Gerry. Yes you were right. It`s a Commander 3000 "Classic" Panel Mount Remote Control. I did however find a better disassemble illustration elsewhere (COMMANDER CLASSIC PANEL MOUNT REMOTE CONTROL) that showed that I needed to "forward" the stick while button was pushed IN and then I was able to remove center button (pushbutton) which turned out to be just a simple plastic button with a long plastic shaft with two "arrow" type locking nips at the end. After removing this button there`s a 11/16 hollow brass nut you need to socket out and that`s it! Simple. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Gerry. You saved me from busting up another bezel cover Lol! Appreciate the help.

Mark. Thanks for the reply. Sorry to hear you had to saw off the handle on your shifter. I found some good instruction to disassemble this Commander 3000 CLASSIC and it sounds like you were real close. after removing the setscrew, you needed to forward the stick while pushing in the center button allowing the center button to be removable at this forward position. After that just look down into the hole and remove the hollow 11/16ths (use a thin-wall socket) brass bolt in there and in comes apart as sweet as pie. Thanks for your help. Appreciate your reply.

Guess I missed that one. It did seem pretty corroded at the time. My serv manual focused on the 2000 so I guess that is one reason I missed the nut.

Glad you "got-r-fixed".
