Hi All, the shift linkage below is from my 1968 20hp 200 Merc. I'm trying to hookup my new ~1974 20hp Merc, but that piece is too big and won't fit without obstructing the cover. Does anyone know what piece I need to connect my shift cable to my shift lever arm??

I do not believe 68 and 74 shift parts interchange. 72 and earlier shift to forward on the upstroke. 73 and later shift into forward on the downstroke of the shifting lever. I could be wrong its been a while since I have worked on one of those. That also.makes the lower units not compatible.

Thanks for the response, and you're absolutely right!! I did get a new throttle/shift controller, and while the throttle pieces from my old engine fit, and will work, I will need the linkage for my ~1974 (I think... sn 7034427) shift side. What's the piece that connects the shift cable to the shift lever within the engine?
