Mercury Shift and Throttle Assembly

I have problems with the mercury shift and throttle assembly breaking in boats. The piece that keeps breaking is inside the shift assembly and is made of cheap pot metal that is soft and breaks easily. I have replaced two shift assembly's in our work boat, one in my personal boat, and helped a friend replace one in his boat. Does anyone know where you can buy the individual parts for the shift assembly? I have contacted Mercury and they only want to sell the entire assembly. Better yet, is anyone making this piece after market in stainless steel? I think the major problem is that the thift assembly is designed for a propped boat and we're using them on outboard jets where a lot more pressure can be on the shift shoe. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mercury makes about like a lot of control boxes. Knowing which one yours is may help. They are NOT all the same.

Model number or better yet a picture (you know that whole 1000 words thing).
