I have 2003 Mercury EFI three cylinder four stroke, installing it on a boat that was previously Evinrude powered, so I need Mercury cables. Here's the rub: in searching for cables I see "gen 1" and "gen 2" cables. Since I don't have any cables at this point, can someone show me which cables I need.

You need to match the cables to the controls. If the controls are an aftermarket set, they may be adaptable to whatever cables you need. If the controls are OMC/BRP from your Evinrude, then you need to find a set of Mercury controls.

Did you read my question?

Yes. Did you actually mean you need controls? Cables are only part of it. The controls are where you need to start. Once you figure out what you have or need for controls, you can figure out what you need for cables. Gen 1 and Gen 2 cables are not interchangeable. Neither will work with the Evinrude controls.

Based on your year, the cables you need are probably Gen 2 - that's what my 2001 merc takes. From what I understand, the cable ends are very different so you should see right away if that is what you need. And as previously mentioned, these would have to be paired up with a set of mercury controls. Make sure you get cables that are long enough - my 17 foot boat had 16 foot cables on it. Probably could have gone a foot or two shorter on the replacement, but the routing requires large curves so they don't bind.
