Hey guy's, I just found out the rectifier is bad on this 150 mariner. It's the square cube type and accordin to mercurypartsexpress.com this is no longer available for purchase.Do any of you know where I can purchase this new or is there something else I can upgrade to? It's an '87 model mariner I am working on for a friend of mine. Also would this rectifier cause the trigger and stator to go out? thanks :(

Thanks Rick, the best I can tell from the tag as it is faded it is ob121824,34,84, I couldn't really tell which one, and yes it is a mariner 150.I don't know of any other place to find the #'s on this motor.

Jimmy

Re: mercury rectifier

According to my parts catalog, that rectifier is superceded to 816770T and is available. Suggested retail is around $40.00.

Hope this helps!

Re: mercury rectifier

Thanks Dilligaf,I found one at Doug Russell.com for about $31, also from the checks I have done the trigger and stator are bad. What would cause all of this to happen together?
jimmy

Actually, I *think* I just ran out of them - LOL.
Note that this is the first week all winter I *didn't* list one on Ebay - hehe

I have one in hand for sure (the spare I carry on my boat), and know of one dood from Ebay that still owes me for it. So unless I find another one kicking around - I'm flat out of them, cause he's getting my personal spare.

-W

That figures , just my luck always late on a good deal. Thanks alot guys.
ps... to clams if your a merc/mariner man what, in your opinion would cause the stator, rectifier, trigger go out at what seems to be the same time? From what I was told the boat just cut off at dock.
Thanks Jimmy

Further, the rectifier is unrelated to the ignition system which does not run off the battery after 1979.

Before you do ANYTHING get a manual and Ohm out the stator and the rectifier as described therein. If the low speed winding on the stator failed - it would die at the dock. Triggers rarely fail - particularly at the exact same moment as the stator. The earlier "A revision" stators were the weakest link. Goodby :D

0W

Re: mercury rectifier

I watched an engine mechanic ohm out the stator and trigger on my Merc engine using a digital meter, readings were all wrong.I went and got my own analog meter, the mechanic re-measured the trigger and stator and they were right on the button.Don't replace these parts because of wrong readings with a digital meter, measure them again with an analog meter and verify the readings.I was told by another mechanic that the trigger and stator readings don't come out correct with a digital.

Re: mercury rectifier

my rectifier died , which then killed my statorat the same time. had to replace both - not cheap

Re: mercury rectifier

A shorted rectifier can take out the charging coil(s) of the stator, but typicly not the ignition side of it. On old style mercs - the stator was only used for charging.

-W

Re: mercury rectifier

If you would, look at my previous topic on this, 87 mariner 150, I got the troubleshooting guide from the link that Trent sent me. This is why I think I need a trigger. The stator I'm not so sure of because I didn't disconnect the rectifier after switching the red &red/white wires or the blue & blue/white wires on the coil packs. At that time I didn't know the rectifier was bad. It was not until later that I disconnected the rectifier, in the middle of this winter storm we're having, just to have something to do.When I did check it, it had a reading to ground on all terminal post, and if I'm not mistaken ,that is definetly not good. I haven't purchased a manual yet because this is probably a freebie job for a friend, I just enjoy working on things dealing with electronics, and I'm not really sure which manual would be the best one, clymer, seloc or oem.

Jimmy

Re: mercury rectifier

OK, after reading your other topic, I would agree the trigger is suspect.

You can still keep the rectifier out of the troubleshooting picture for the *ignition* system. The 2 yellow wires out of the stator and the rectifier form an independant circuit for charging the battery only.

As for the stator: Here's the tests....

Disconnect all 4 red / blue wires from everything. Readings might be slightly lower on a very cold stator.

Blu to red = 5,400 - 6,200 ohms
Blu/wt to red/wt = 5,400 - 6,200 ohms
Red to ground = 125 - 175 ohms
Red/wt to ground = 125 - 175 ohms

For the trigger the following 3 tests should come out at 1,100 to 1.400 ohms. (all wires disconnected)

Brown (without sleeve) to white (with yellow sleeve)

White (without sleeve) to violet (with yellow sleeve)

Violet (without sleeve) to brown (with sleeve)

Now assuming you get those two issues square, that ONLY leaves the switchboxes in play.

Switchboxes usually be tested by swapping them to see if problem follows. HOWEVER, sometimes they can interact, resulting in BOTH boxes being dead, or misleading readings.

Good Luck!

-W

Re: mercury rectifier

Thanks clams, I followed your instructions. Here are the results.
trigger
yellow sleeve no sleeve
brown-------------------purple 1286
purple------------------white 3.26 meg
white-------------------brown 1271

stator
blu---------------------red 5610
blu/wht-----------------red/wht open no reading
red --------------------grnd 140
red/wht-----------------grnd 140

judging from these test I guess I do need the stator, trigger, rectifier. O well, guess it's time for him to open his wallet.Any tips on removing and reinstalling the flywheel, is it keyed or does it need to reference marked?
Thank for your help,I'm beginning to enjoy this.
Jimmy

Re: mercury rectifier

<sigh>

Yep, you are one of the unlucky ones.

As for the flywheel - it can only go on one way.

You need to use the factory puller to pull it.

See if they won't let you borrow one (with a deposit) in return for you bending over to spend all your hard earned money. :)

Worst case drag the boat down there and have them pull the flywheel.

-W
