I have been told a number of times that Yamaha makes a lot of Mercury powerheads. When did this start happening? I have a 1989 XR2 V6, is this Yamaha? I definetly would not be disappointed if it is.

Re: Mercury powerheads made by Yamaha

Yamaha makes a lot of the 4 stroke powerheads for merc. I never heard of them making a 2 stroke for merc. Merc makes Honda lower units also.

Unfortunately, the Yamaha lower unit is usually far superior to mercs in terms of taking abuse (mud, oysters, etc.)without damaging propshaft seals. Thats a reason that 99% of the commercial fisherman/crabbers/etc here run yamahas ., the other 1% run tohatsu.

Yamaha made the smaller engines for Mariner. I believe 40hp and under. They did this for several years....Dont have specific years (I know late 70's thru mid 80's).
Dont believe yours was made by Yamaha..sorry

Yes it's true Yamaha makes many small 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines for mercury / Mariner (I have a Mariner 30hp 2 cylinder and I can get parts from both mfg.). On the other side Mercury builds lower units for Yamaha.
