I am trying to remove the powerhead from the lower unit of a mercury 200 offshore series (1992)I am positive that all the required nuts/bolts are removed, but CANNOT get the powerhead to break loose from the lower unit due to corrosion (i think) on the studs that run from the powerhead to the lower unit. Have tried using a lift and banged on it everyway i know how with no luck. Even lifted the boat up off the trailer with the lift and still no luck. ANY suggestions please!!!

Fred, there is one more thing that could be holding it...the driveshaft to the lower unit could be rusted into the crankshaft...try removing the lower unit from the midsection...if it comes off ok, you are correct about the studs, and now know what marine tech Hell looks like....

try a torch to put a little heat to the area where the studs are, This helps some times after nuts & bolts have been used around saltwater.

Is the Powerhead locked up, if not remove all the plugs , and try turning the flywheel backwards/in reverse, this may help. I have seen the splines wear and cause an offset on the top of the lower unit drive shaft and would hang up on the crank shaft. By turning the flywheel backwards, it would come loose(sometimes), also try this with the shift lever engaged which would cause a sort of back force that may help to free it up.

Wish you luck and hopes it does it.

Thanks guys i got mine off, i dropped lower unit, even though i knew it wasen't rusted, cause it was recently replaced. But i think it allowed me to rock it back and forth a little and break it loose.
