I just purchase a power trim unit from ebay. From past info, black is ground, blue is up and green is down. The center cylinder follows this rule but the two side cylinders extended outward and never returned back. What is wrong with this?
Thank you.

Hi John,

We also need more info about the size and age of your engine.

The above not withstanding, the outside rams are usually moved by the action of the motor being drawn down on the centre ram.

Chris............

Re: Mercury Power Trim Help

Thanks for the reply Chris,
The tilt and trim unit came off of a 1987 90 hp Mercury Ser# OB207471 motor. Anyway, you believe that weight of the motor will draw down the outside rams? I removed the oil cap thinking that it would drop it with pressure, my foot. I would like to place my 1972 Mercury 100 hp on it. This looks like an issue. Thanks for the help.
John

John,

Those units are pressurized. Don't remove the cap unless the engine is fully tilted up. No, it won't fit your 1972 motor, not while it still snows in Antartica. :D

Chris...........

Re: Mercury Power Trim Help

Chris,
Thanks for the info. How about this, I removed a 35 hp motor from my 24 foot pontoon. I replaced it with this 100 hp Mercury, more power? I run the motor out of the water, it runs well in forward and reverse. I put it into the water, it runs in reverse fine but forward it dies. The motor was on a 15 foot boat, is it possible the prop is too big. I put it into forward it chugs and thats it.
Thanks again,
John
