Just picked up a Mercury outboard, Serial #949927. Can anyone tell me what year this is and true HP. The motor is labeled as both a 45hp and clasic 50. Another question I have is should this motor be charging battery?(Stator/rectifier).

Re: Mercury outboard

Hello Redneckterry and welcome:

First of all your motor is a 45hp engine rated at the prop. I believe that it was the late 80's or early 90's that this model came out. The reason for the "Classic 50" is because it was a 4 cylinder and styled like the "Classic" Mercury outboatds of the 70's when a 50hp at the crank was only putting out about 45hp at the prop. To put is simpler, you have a classic motor with better technology.

HAve fun with the motor.

Craig :)

I think you might be missing a letter at the front of that serial number like an 'A" - not sure. Anyway I think you have a 1986 model.
