Mercury outboard serial number lookup

My Uncle has a lead on a Mercury outboard and only has the serial number. I've been looking all morning to no avail. He thinks its either a 7.5 or 9.8. If anyone has a link or info to help me out I'd kindly appreciate your efforts and time. The serial number he was given is 5801189.

Problem is, that link won't tell you if it is a 7.5 or a 9.8. Only what year that serial number is in.

You may have to start comparing parts and part numbers to determine if it's a 7.5 or a 9.8. The OEM parts programs don't go back that far with individual serial numbers.
You may be able to call Mercury customer service and find out from them.
