Mercury Outboard Scanner

Very new to outboards here. I am currently looking for pontoon boats and almost all have 50-60HP mercury outboards. I am looking at boats in the 2003 to 2010 year range. I would like to eventually own a scanner for troubleshooting but my immediate need would be to allow me to hook it up to engines I am looking at to see how many hours they have.

Any suggestions on what inexpensive scanner to purchase?

Looks like the Rinda is $399. That's in my budget. If you have ever seen my garage, you will know I like my tools.

Chuckle. I think with most you need to purchase the proper adapters, too.

Re: Mercury Outboard Scanner

I believe it comes with one of your choice.
Typically the adapter that comes standard fits the 1992 & up, GM MEFI adapter #94005 but that may have changed over time.

Though the nice thing is you can call and buy direct from Rinda technologies so you can verify what comes with it.:)

As i'm sure you probably know by now that you may want to wait to see what engine model you end up with as there a few adapters available. Below is the Mercury Outboard list for you if needed.

All models: Adapter #94006
? 2002 - 2010 4-stroke EFI:

TechMate Marine Scan Tool, Version 6

Sierra marine now makes a new scanner called STATS but it's mainly for dealers and is quite spendy.

Yep, I just called Rinda. I get an adapter of my choice included but unfortunately, like you said, I need to wait as the years I am looking at span across 2 adapters.

Re: Mercury Outboard Scanner

So, I had a quick look at both tools suggested, and here's a bit of input, for what it's worth............ the Techmate tool is much like the old Merc DDT scanner, except it only has a 2 line screen. This can be a bit of a pain when trying to read a complete diagnostic test, at least it was for me. I would suspect that like the DDT, it also has limited fault storage, which can be a problem with intermittent faults. The Diacom software and cable package, at $700, is a far superior tool, easier to read, more test options, and much better fault recognition capabilities. Of the 2, and supposing that money didn't matter, lol, I would be getting the Diacom system.
The only aftermarket system i've had anything to do with is CDIs' MEDS software, which in some ways, i like better than Mercs' CDS (quicker start-up, easier to navigate), but it's pricey.

All of that said, for your application the Techmate will probably be more than adequate. You may also want to keep your eyes open for a Merc DDT with outdated software on ebay and such.

I am not going to buy a motor that is old enough to require DDT.

You said you where looking at outboards 2003-2010. DDT with the correct cartridge will work on Outboards up to 2006.

OK...I see. I will wait to see what I exactly get before I purchase the scan tool. Thanks for the help.

Re: Mercury Outboard Scanner

I ended up buying a 2006 90HP Mercury so I bought the Rinda scanner with the 94028 adapter. Price included the adpater of my choice.
