Looking for any 2007 Mercury Outboard Owners with 90 HP EFI 4 Stroke,

CHECK YOUR OIL NOW,

I found an extra quart of oil in the engine one time and an extra 2 quarts on another occasion.

This is the letter I sent to Mercury and the response:

Dear Mercury
We are life long Mercury owners, we grew up with Mercury products. Honestly, with what little experience we had with other brands we had the idea that there were two types of boat engines, Mercury and Junkers, gentlemen you are quickly joining your competition. With your serial number "XXXXXXXX" you can see what we're up against. With the arrogance of your last telephone teck, it is obvious that we are not being listened to. I bought a new engine with the plan of it lasting forever and your onsite tech tells me that they are built to allow some gas into the oil??? BULL, I know better. This was at least better than the first tech who said he could fix it in 15 min by changing the diaphragm in the fuel pump, I didn't take time to see how long it had been since Mercury had used a mechanical fuel pump on the larger outboard engines. This should have given us a hint as to the type "Certified Techs" that you employ. Here's where we are, I believe you owe me a new engine and my attorney agrees. He's of course paid by the hour and very interested in looking into a class action suit. I just want my motor replaced with a "new one" as I purchased, that don't get gas in the oil. I told the last person I want to hear from my boat by last Friday, that passed with no call or contact in any way. Not to mention my gas tank is 3 feet from my engine which will no doubt come apart with the Gas/Oil running through it and when it does, the 24 gallons of gas sitting beside could generate a death trap for my family.
Please take me serious as I assure you I have the time and money to take this to court.

This is the response:

Mr. Luffman,

Thank you for your email, we appreciate the opportunity to respond.

As a world leader in the manufacture of marine products, we realize a great deal of our success is built upon customer satisfaction, and to promote this, we back our products with a warranty. As you are aware, our engine came with a three (3) year warranty from the date of original sale. Warranty covers manufacturing defects in material or workmanship. As a customer relations gesture, Mercury has already covered replacement of the bottom cowl of this engine.

All four stroke engines have the capability of 'making oil', especially if the thermostat is not allowing the engine to reach operating temperature. All four stroke engines can make up to an additional 12% oil, the rest will be burned off.

Anyone with this engine please check your oil and as this list grows we may be able to get something done. I don't plan on keeping a product that keeps gas in the oil.

Go to the Engine FAQs Forum, Rodney. Read the article on 4 strokes making oil.

Good luck. :)

Rodney.
I have had this problem on my 2002 50 hp efi. I have done everything short of replacement, to stop the gas in the oil. This is the reason always use 25-40 oil in mine. I try to run the motor, At high speed for 30 min or so to start and 30 just before I haul it in. This helps to burn off the gas but you still have to change the oil every 25 to 30 hours. I have changed to injectors and to be truthful the older ones over fuel less gas into the oil.

I have wrote Merc about this and unlike you I got no reply. If there design is to over fuel by 12% I wonder how they get the epa rating that they get.
I work for a small shop here in Ga. We see the efi's come in for tune up's all the time. The first thing I do is pull the dip stick to smell the oil. Most if not all of them have some kind of oil thinning due to gas. What I have found is if you troll a lot you have more gas in the oil. You have to run your motor at high speed to get the temp up to burn off the gas. Here in the winter months
that's real hard to do.
One other thing I have found in working on the efi's is the voltage regulator seems to short out causing a fire. I have had six in my shop for repairs so far all have been coved coved by the insurer. What would happen if you had a crank case full of gas and the reg shorts out to start a fire??

I here what your saying, I had the same problem. my 2006 mercury EFI 90hp had extra oil, one quart extra. I discovered a $20 dollar hose inside the fuel pump failed due to ethanol in the fuel. mercury says their compliant to 10& ethanol, but I find there is more than 10% found in fuel and so that 4 inch long hose will fail ever time. I currently still under service and as we speak and waiting for more damage to come from this problem. what started that day I was idling for 15minutes and the motor started smoking really bad and hardly run at all, after stalling and trying to start again and again. I had to get a tow. while in service I was told what happened, I also found that trying to re-start the motor cracked the starter motor housing and broke some teeth on the fly wheel. I expect to here later that hydro lock took place and you know what that means...class action law suit and to those finding the same problem, I bought a fuel test kit to test for ethanol, and I found some marinas that don't have ethanol in their fuel. in the end I'm pissed, my motor has three season on it here in Michigan and so fare my boat is still in the shop since the first of June 2010

I have a 2006 EFI 75 HP and the same part failed on mine, i got lucky as all it did was ruined injectors and spark plugs. I was told this is a service bulletin as they know that these will fail and they are not covered under the warranty. My motor has a 6 yr warranty on it that would not cover this.
