I have a 2001 Merc 115HP outboard. I need a battery and was wondering how much power to get. Motor is on an 18 ft Bayliner Capri. It is used on the Hampton Roads (VA) salt water.

A size 24 STARTING battery (especially if it's an EFI motor) will work for either 2 or 4 stroke motors.

Re: Mercury Outboard, Battery

I just found this post while searching for some battery information for my 1985 Glastron with a 100hp o/b.

I need to replace the battery and was just going to go to autozone and buy a large cold cranking amp battery. Now I am questioning this after reading the size 24 statement.

Are there different batteries for boats? What is a size 24? What size should I get for my boat?

Group 24 is the physical size of the battery. Within group 24 there are batteries with varying CCA or MCA. Marine batteries are labeled "marine starting" and are intended for starting duty. Marine RV/Deep Cycle are intended for operation of accessories and trolling motors. Marine "Dual Purpose" are a combination starting/deep cycle. whether or not they perform both functions as well as the starting only or deep cycle only is something that can be argued until hell freezes over. My feelings are buy the largest capacity (highest CCA or MCA) Marine Starting battery you can find. You can't have too much power -- just too little and the difference in price is insignificant in the grand scheme of things. 550 - 850 CCA batteries are quite common.
