I have a 1992 mercury 40 HP 4 cyl power trim remote steer on a Monark 160 bass boat. I am looking into swapping the motors and going to a new Mercury 4 stroke 9.9 HP manual tilt remote steer due to most of the lakes I fish have a 10 HP limit. Would the controls work with the new motor. Will the bolt patterns be different? I have also been told that since a 9.9 is under powering my boat that I should look into a bigfoot 9.9, any truth to this?

With the 40 HP and two people and all gear I can run about 30 mph. Any idea on how fast I should be able to run with a 9.9?

Any other thoughts that come to mind before I go any further is appreciated.

Re: mercury motor swap

The Bigfoot idea sounds OK to me. But I'm not sure it's worth the extra $$$.

The bolt pattern is different. You'll need to plug some holes. The controls should work (I think) but they're changing many models to a 14 pin connector and I don't know if that applies to 9.9s yet or not. There are adapters available (but backordered forever).

Speed? It won't plane off. Figure 10mph ballpark.

Re: mercury motor swap

Would there be any disadvantages going with a bigfoot? The dealer I talked to today gave me the same price for either.
