mercury motor info. needed

I have an old mercury motor and I don't know what I have. It is a Mark 28A serial # 12366649 the name on it says; super huricane Kichaefer. Can anyone tell me the horse power, the year, and where I might find an owners manual? I also need a starter recoil spring.<br />Thanks,<br />Gary

Spartan, the 28a's were made around 1961....rated at 22hp...18hp a better estimate...to the merc dealer for parts...

Hi Spartan,<br /> Your motor is a 1959 ('A' denoted the 20th Anniversary year - 1939 to 1959). It put out a solid 22hp. The weak point was the automatic transmission and replacing the waterpump impeller is better left to someone with the proper tools and knowledge. At the very least, get yourself a manual before you dig into it. Manuals and parts can be found at Grubb's Marine (www.oldmercs.com).<br />- Scott
