mercury mark 55a outboard

I have recently been given this old outboard out of someone's garage.It has compression so I thought I might restore it.Does anyone have an idea where the serial #is and how I might use it to determine what year it is?It also came minus any controls.Anyone hove any idea where I might find some?Thanks in advance.Jim

Birdman...<br /><br />Look on the transom bracket for a plate that has the info you're seeking....<br /><br />If it's not there...then I'm not sure where else you'd look. Perhaps the serial number is stamped somewhere on the engine block or freeze plug (if so equipped).<br /><br />I can tell you that a Mercury Mark 55A is a 1959 inline four cylinder 40 hp.<br /><br />Walt
