What's the difference between Mercury and Mariner outboards? It's the same company, right? So are they like Johnson and Evinrude?

I'm asking because someone gave me his 90-93 Seloc book for Mariner and I was hoping it would be usable for the same year Mercs. Any input would be great.

Some small Mariners are Yamahas and Mercs are not. 4 stroke Mercs, except Verados, are Yamahas.

Re: Mercury Mariner Difference?

not ALL 4 stroke mercs are yamahas, they are now making their very own EFI 4strokes, non verados....

paint your motor grey and itll be a mariner, then and ONLY then, will that book work with your motor.

serioulsy, merc started the mariner line to be sold overseas in europe where the name"mariner" conjured up thoughts and visions of seaworthy-ness and strength. they no longer sell the mariners in USA, only overseas

i have a 90hp mariner that is grey, but i like to call it a merc. just my own 3 cents worth

Re: Mercury Mariner Difference?

So to convert a Mariner to Merc I need grey paint, to convert the Mariner book to Merc I only need a black marker pen? (I couldn't resist) :D
Thanks again!

you are close, phantom. you are on your way to becoming that great marine mechanic you've always dreamed of.

its the other way around though, mercs were black and mariners were grey.

Re: Mercury Mariner Difference?

G,day. Mercury introduced Mariner to Australia in 1976, 12 months later they released the motors to the USA. Yamaha made the early motors up to 60HP and repainted Mercury motors made up the rest of the line, so some of the early Mariner motors may be Yamaha. By the late 80,s Mercury were making the whole range themselves. These days the Merc and Mariner line up is identical. As far a the four strokes is concerned for a short time Merc were making 40-50 & 60HP powerheads for Yam. Yam were making the 75-90 & 115 plus some others including the 225HP. With the current line up the mid range 30-60 is all Merc, 75-115 Yam powerhead and the bigger motors are Verado. I am looking forward to the release of the 4 Cyl Verado hopefully soon

According to merc reps at the Miami boat show Yamaha made mid and late 1990s 45-50 hp 4 stroke powerheads for merc/mariner and merc provided the lower legs. My merc/mariner dealer says merc just recently started doing their own 4 stroke powerheads.

I think this is correct Bill, as I was scratching my head as to why those engines still used the Yammy connectors (Fuel line)..
Whaley, I think you meant mid 90's, but Merc still doesn't build all of their own 4-stroke powerheads-alot are STILL yammys.

I read somewhere that the newer, small 4 stroke engines were Tohatsus? Same as Nissan.

Kenny,
The merc guys also said yamaha actually didn't make the powerheads but outsourced them for production at an engine mfg company in Japan. I can't remember the name and is the only place I've heard that said...but it was the big wig factory guys from Merc telling me this.

Eat mo possum

this is true, i THINK its everything 18hp and under.... maybe different, but its all of the smaller motors that are made by tohatsu... wich is really nice, cause you can by the tohatsu motor, usually for hundreds less, and then just get the parts at the merc dealer, seeing as to the main complaint about tohatsu is that they have a VERY sparce dealer network...

Just for the record...there are twice as many Tohatsu/Nissan dealers as there are Suzuki dealers. Of course that's only because Tohatsu will set up a Tire Store and I kid you not...even a Bar, as a dealer.
