Mercury Lower Unit Problem

I need some help with my dads 90 hp Mercury (Early 80's Model). We got a replacement lower unit (used), after the one on the motor split near the prop. However, on the replacement, the gear shift shaft slides in and out of the lower unit freely. The keeper pin seems to be missing, and I am not able to align the shaft with the cam that actually shifts from forward, reverse and neutral at the bottom of the shaft. Do I have to take it all apart just to connect the shaft and the cam? Are there special tools required if I do? Should I even attempt it myself, or take it to the shop? We now have three lower units for the motor, does anybody know who might be able to (inexpensively) get all three lower units combined into one that works (all three have stainless parts that would be better as we use the boat in salt&fresh water). This would also solve my gear shift shaft problem. Any info would help. Thanks!

Kris, box up that stuff and carry it over to "Captain Macs" boats and salvage, just east of town. Look the number up in your Austin yellow pages. I know that shift shaft changes over the years but I am sure Cap'n Mac will fix you up.

Re: Mercury Lower Unit Problem

I called them, and I'm going to get him to combine two of the lower units into one good one. Thanks for the info. I would still like to fix the gear shift problem with the most recent addition to my lower unit collection. Two reasons for this, one I think it might be cheaper to fix this one for now (We already paid $300 for it, but didn't know the shaft wasn't working the warranty time is long since up.) and two, it would be nice to have a backup. Again, thanks for the reference...
