Mercury Inline 6 115 HP Whole in head above Piston #1

I don't know what year the engine is, I'm guessing its around 1977, since this is the year of the boat. The SN is 4699301 and it says Mercury Power Trim 1150 on the cover, and says 115 HP at the bottom. If anyone has a clue to what this might be, I would greatly apreciate it.<br /><br />This engine is on my friends boat. We pulled the head cover off, due to Piston #1 not haveing any compression, everything else is still in spec. To find that there was a rock jammed in the L bracket, where the cooling water would come out of the head to go out the pee hole on the engine. <br /><br />This engine is different that what I have seen before, it seems that there are like domes that are cast onto the block, over top of each cyclinder, that the spark plug then screws down into. There is a hole about the size of a nickle on the left top side of #1 cylinder. Is this worth trying to get a new block for this engine, or is there a way that this comes apart, and that part of the head would actually come off? <br /><br />Is this worth fixing or should it be parted out on Ebay?<br /><br />Everything else is good and it does seem to run great, just didn't have any power due to the Cylinder not working, lol.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Bryan Cox

There are a bunch of powerheads out there. I swapped a 115 for a 140. The heads are part of the block and not removable, so you have a choice of getting a new powerhead or parting it out.<br /><br />I hope this helps.<br /><br />Craig

Bryan, you are in a tough situation. In most cases I would get a new/different block. On the inline 6 merc, the head is molded into the block and cannot be removed. You must split the case and slide out the crank with all the pistons on it. If your block is in excellent condition and the hole is in a nonstress/noncritical area, you may want to have it welded/filled. Otherwise I would shop around and find an affordable block, as many horsepowers and years used this same block. Also you must have a nuclear water pump as to pick up rocks and pump them through your engine..........good luck.

Well my buddy had bought the boat for $1000 and the Trailer is worth that alone, just about and then the boat is in great shape inside and out, just the engine got screwed up. The tilt and trim all works correctly and everything, but I did take off the lower unit for him, because there was no water coming out and that was full of sand, so I cleaned that all out. Now that part was working, then we found out it had no compression on #1 and now we have found that.<br /><br />What do you think would be a good thing to do? Part it out or Fix it? Bry,<br /><br />They may have rebuilt blocks on this website. Price them out and let your buddy make the decision.<br /><br />If you do part it out, you WILL find buyers for the good stuff on e-bay.
