Mercury ignition switch

I just remembered another problem with the 1987 Mercury 25hp I just bought.
When the ignition is switched from run to off , the key has to be turned very hard to the left to actually get the motor to shut down.
The seller told me he had the switch replaced but I am wondering if he had the correct one installed.
Any advice ?

Re: Mercury ignition switch

Shouldn't turn hard. Perhaps the mounting hardware was tightened too tight.

Re: Mercury ignition switch

Let me rephrase the problem.
The key and switch mechanism operate quite freely but the motor doesnt shut down unless the key is turned very hard and held to the left (off) position. It seems like the ground isnt being made to kill the ignition.
I will look for a part number on the switch .
