1. I recent bought a boat with an 80hp 1980 Mercury motor. I haven't tried it in the water yet, but when I ran it on muffs it was idling at ~1900-2000RPM. Any idea what the idle speed should be for this motor? (It starts right away without any hesitation.)

2. I also want to add a water temperature gauge. There is a plug at the end of the block called "block flush plug" (I think). Can I take it out and screw the temperature sensor instead?
(see the pictures)

plug and sensor

plug

Thanks guys.

Serge

Re: Mercury idle speed and temperature gauge

Idle RPM in forward gear should be approx. 700 RPM... In neutral arrorx 800 RPM...

My Merc 60 Idles high (1500) on the first cold start for about a minute then it settles to 800-850...

If the idle does not come down after warm up, then an adjustment is necessary... Check all the linkage and make sure the carbs are fully closing and opening in sinc...

For the temp sensor, If the area behind the block flush plug is deep enough to accept the sender then go for it...

snapperbait:

When I start it up it idles at about 1900 but I never ran it long enough to let it completely warm up. I guess I'll know in the spring.

Thanks

Serge
