Yes, push in button at bottom of handle, it will then be in neutral and you can rev without being in gear.

yes.

some have a button on the lever pivot you press to disengage the gear, others have a button near the pivot point. some yet, you pull the handle away from the control body.

post a pic of your controls and we can identify which controls you have.

Yes. On mine you can push in a button at the bottom of the throttle lever. Here is a newer style one yours may be square but the button should be in the same place.

There are a few different remote controls but the gear shift usually disengages by one of two methods. Either pull the hole lever away from the control and then advance the lever forward to open the throttle, or there will be a button in the enter of the pivot on the lever to push in while advancing the throttle. If you still have problems, post a picture of the control unit.

My boats an 86 as well. Mine has quicksilver controls original to the boat and theirs a button on the bottom that says "Throttle Only". I don't know if it's the same style control but it should at least be similar.

Yes, but... The lower unit must still be in the down position, as the shaft is still spinning. Also, you will need water going to the lower unit.
