I am stymied trying to get the front cowling off a vintage 1978 (?) era Mercury model 110, 9.8 HP, (has the blue and silver stripe). The silver front cowling has no knobs, latches or screws that I can find. Before I cut my finger, I pried it out some and it seems to be held by two round pegs, permanently held by the front cover in the upper part.

How do I get the front cowling off?

Are there any tricks I need to know to get the round cowling off?

I believe you remove the front panel and there will be two 'wire' latches that you can flip to remove cowling ... I think this the thin 'wrap-around' model? Good Luck

Bill

It is the front panel that I cannot figure out how to get off.

I am referring to it as the front cowling because that is what the manual on my other Merc labels the front cover, panel or what ever you want to call it.

I can pry it out a little with a screw driver but any further looks like it is going to damage it.

Jackc - is there a 'swing' latch release that goes up/down -or- left/right at the base or near base of front panel .. been a longtime since I've seen this model. Use to have a 20hp. Maybe I'm confused with a later model but I think it's that thin wrap around, right?

Bill

I do not know what you mean by "thin wrap".

Only latches or knobs in the vicinity of the front cowling are the choke knob and the latch that locks/releases the motor from transom bracket.

Since the two pegs that I can see seem to be permanently attached to the back of the mysterious front cover, there might be away to release them from the front of the motor, so the front cowling/cover can be pulled stright forward and off.

I cannot see or feel any latches, knobs or buttons that will do this. Pushing the cover in various directions does not get it off, so far. It is just an aluminum plate and it starts to bend real easy. It has "Thunderbolt Ignition" and Kiekhaefer Mercury on it, if that helps date it, along with the blue trim.

I learn something new everyday,

The front panel does not come off. The latch is in the back.

Gald you found the 'latch' ... jogged my memory also. Have a great week - Bill
