I must admit up front I am new to outboard engines, so I'm sure this question is pretty dumb to most. I have a Merc 200 car saltwater. I noticed that when I prime with the bulb that afetr several pumps gas started leaking down into the bottom of the engine. I cleaned it out and assumed that I had over primed and flooded it. Is my assumption correct and is this normal for this engine?

Hey Davier,
Not a dumb question at all. It isn't normal for an engine to leak fuel when primed. It's likely that you have a problem with the float valve assemble (needle & seat). You should take a close look at the carbs as you prime the bulb to locate the source of the leak. Let us know what you find. :)
Backlash

Re: Mercury Flooding

when starting are you holding the key in while cranking over the engine ?or do you give the key a few pushes before you try to start?

Re: Mercury Flooding

hi there well i have a merc 200hp and they are cold blooded, the trick is to have the motor all the way down or vertical, prime the bulb, hold the key in and do a 10 sec count, you will see gas running out of the front of the carbs as these engines have a enrichment solenoid instead of the flapper choke and then crank and it wil start,if it stalls do the same again.these engines have to be really wet for a cold start.after there warmed up they start great and if you go to a beach and lift the motor all the way up you will have to do the same again as the fuel will run out of the carbs..any more questions e-mail me ken.thrussell@sympatico.ca

Re: Mercury Flooding

Is it normal when you tilt the engine up after running that a blueish oily substance leaks out of the front of my 200hp saltwater carbed Merc? Also, any opinions on disconnected the oil injection and premixing? I have a 2000 model.

Re: Mercury Flooding

when tilted up the carbs will leak gas out of them that is why you have to re prime the bulb after TILTING the engine iwouldn'tconsider undoing mercs oil inj system. to start quicker you need to push the key in WHILE CRANKING ,pushing the key in opens the primer valve and fuel may flow but , the engine needs to be turning over to create vacuum to pull the fuel into the engine, also, put the throttle handle in throttle only, but,DO NOTopen the carbs put at the detent. clock position would be eleven o'clock.when engine fires you will be ready to advance throttle for a fast idle
