Mercury Exhaust Plenum Explanation

I’ve been looking at exploded views of my 2013 Mercury 115hp four stroke EFI engine. I see at the back of the power head, below the cylinder head and valve cover is a black box that is indicated as an exhaust plenum. From what I gather it is a pressure equalizer for the exhaust system.
I can’t really see exactly where it comes and goes. From my best guess from the exploded views it appears to take exhaust pressure up from some lower chamber, attenuate them in the plenum, then send them back down. I think it then comes out the exhaust relief port. It seems like it’s actually a mini muffler so the exhaust relief port isn’t too loud. Is that all it really does?
Can someone explain if this is correct or if it’s doing something else?
