i striped down my 150 inline 6 mercury to find a melted piston in the number three hole .there is some piston resadue in the cylinderand it looks like there is a crack in the intake chamber were it is aluminum punched though the cylinder sleave below the two intake ports can this be fixed .i think this is why the piston has burned a hole. also if it can be fixed can i just hone the cylinder to remove the piston resadue

Re: mercury cylinder crack

John, first you want to clean those cylinders or hone them to remove the aluminum scouring from the melted piston. Once cylinder is clean shiny metal, then we will inspect for cylinder damage. One way is to take some acid (or liquid plumber) and dab it on the scratches, and if it foams up, the scratch is completely through the steel sleeve and must be fixed. If it does not foam or bubble, your sleeves are still in usable condition. Honing and piston replacement could be an option if no sleeve damage. If sleeve is damaged, block must be resleeved. Good luck. You may find a good inline 6 block that may be cheaper than resleeving/reboring.........
