Re: mercury controls

Big laugh here sir. I got sick and tired of my 3000 and finally bit the bullet and bought a new one based upon the 2000 original design, but much improved. It took me a couple of hours to just get the 3 mounting screws off and I still couldn't get the shift/throttle handle off, and yes I removed the set screw. So I got out my reciprocating saw, put a 24T bi-metallic blade in her and sawed the sucker off.....and it has been kept in a garage and never used in salt water. Phew what a job and boy is the new one really sweet. Should have done it years ago.

so what was it that your saw cut through? I mean what did it end up being that was holding it on? im sure mine was different than yours, but I also had a rough time getting it off after removing the screws. Turned out to be paint in my case, it was just stuck there.

Re: mercury controls

Funny, I don't remember. I had the control loose and to get it out of the triangular hole in the boat, the lever HAD to come off. I popped the set screw and applied a serious amount of high quality penetrating oil to everything associated that I could see. After a good soaking, I tried to prise it off with 2 very large screw drivers, then a hammer on the screwdrivers and finally the saw. I think I put the blade between the handle and the control housing as it was the smallest diameter and all that diameter had to come off anyway. I was surprised that the saw worked it's way through it very easily considering the fact that I was sawing metal.

Re: mercury controls

do either of you or anyone out there have install instructions for the 3000? maybe you could reverse engineer them to find out whats holding it.
