I'm new at boat motors and I have some poblems. I've got a Merc Classic Fifty 45hp on a 14 ft fishing boat. It has been sitting for a long time so I've heard it's good to replace the water pump, it seems to pee water from the side fine. I've had a hard time finding much info about this motor, the serial # is OB307084. Anyway I'd like to find a schematic of the lower unit and any help with the water pump would be useful. I removed the lower unit and taken the impeller off, it seems to be in good condition but I figure I ought to replace it since I have no clue how long it has sat. Also, should water be mixed in with the grease in the lower unit? I guess the seals should all be replaced? Any help would be greatful.

Thanks

Re: Mercury Classic Fifty Trouble

http://www.maxrules.com/carbindex.html try thise site some good info
But you will find a ton of info on this site by useing the search feature at the top. You can go to the bottom of this page and iboats sells repair manuels you will need one welcome aboard and as you asked I would change the impeller and replace seals in lower unit as the water indeciates you have a leak. Then I would change plugs and clean carbs and inspect fuel lines. If you have any more questions just sak them on this same post and it will bump it to the top

Re: Mercury Classic Fifty Trouble

Thanks for the info, I ordered a pump and seal kit. I also wanted to mention that I took it out for a day of fishing and on the way to the ramp it started to spit out steam from the pee tube instead of water, is that normal?

45 B238644 - B393189 1988 4 cyl

I don't know if this is the right year or not but as for your question my 50 horse just shoots out a steady stream. feel the heads when it does that and see if they are real hot I would say it is overheating a little if you are running it in a barrel put your hand in the water and see how hot it is Keep us posted on the progress
