I am learning as I go on a lot of things and I thought I had been told that all 2 cycle motors use reeds. Is this correct? I see reeds no problem on most outboards but can't seem to find them on the 1986/87 Merc Classic 50 (45hp). I don't see them on the parts diagrams either. Am I missing them or does this motor not use reeds? Thanks for any and all help in my learning process.

Lots of 2 stroke don't have reeds, the carb is mounted directly to the block at a port and the piston opens and closes it. Other use a rotary valve, basically the crankshaft throw or a plate attached tot he crankshaft covers and uncovers a port in the crankcase as the crankshaft rotates
Your engine has reeds, they are just buried deeper inside the engine. They are located on the bearing blocks between cylinders 1 and 2, and between 3 and 4.

Thank you. That is a big help!! Would you happen to know the part number for the reeds. I can't find them on any of the engine diagrams that I have.

The reeds are on the parts page for ----crankshaft and pistons.------Lot of work to replace them.----$81 US per set and requires 2 sets for one motor.

The ones on the 50 will look a bit different, but they are located in the locations

Before you order parts why do you think the reed valves are a problem? Many guys have mentioned RV on this forum only to find a different reason for their problem(s). They could be stuck closed in which case spraying some gas into an open carb should free them.

I have never encountered a reed valve that was stuck closed !-----Perhaps a seagull feather is holding a reed open ??

I was purely just trying to figure out the reeds in the Merc. I have worked on a lot of Evinrude's and the reeds have all been right behind the carbs. When I didn't see the reeds behind the carbs of the Merc I got very curious. thanks to your help I have found them on the parts page. I have just never seen them like that before so was completely overlooking them, as I was expecting them to be behind the carbs. Thank you everyone for your help!!! Hopefully I will never have to deal with reeds on these types of Mercs. Definitely looks like its not an easy thing to work on unless you are taking the motor apart for some other issue.

Just so you know.-----Mercury has built them like that since the 1940's to the mid 1980's even the 1990's on the " classic " 4 cylinder like yours.-----. On inline 2 / 3 / 4 / 6 cylinder motors.--------No change in the design concept for 40 years.
