I have a 1988 Mercury 135 V6 outboard. After some research I found the only difference between the 135 and the 150 is the carburetor model number(and the three pairs of jets)and I'd like to upgrade. I'm assuming that the venturis are bigger in the 150's carbs and the larger jets are there to keep the air/fuel ratio correct. I found a set of carbs from a 1979 150 but the jets are only a little larger than the ones in my 135. Did Mercury change jetting every year just to drive me crazy or was there a method to their madness?

Re: Mercury carbs

doctoroldsmobile

Here is the reason why, in 1982/83 horsepower ratings went from the crankshaft to the propshaft. a 1979 150 is real close to a 1983+ 135hp.

Secondly, the carb and jets are NOT the only thing different. The exhause porting is the main difference in hp ratings that use the same block. I really doubt that changing the carbs and jets will gain you anything at all.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

Craig

Re: Mercury carbs

Thanks for the reply, I should have known it was too good to be true. Oh well, like Wile E. Coyote says "back to the ol' drawing board".
