Hi,

I have a 1994 Mercury 40 horse 4 cylinder outboard that starts hard when its cold and even after running for a while. I've only had it for a season but I would like to go through the fuel system this winter. Has anyone rebuilt these carbs or fuel pump before? I have the factory service manual and I consider myself somewhat mechanically inclined. About how difficult is this to do?

thanks for the advice

Re: Mercury Carb and Fuel Pump rebuild

If you have the factory manual it's a simple job. Do one carb at a time so you have another to use a reference if you forget how something goes together or in case the manual isn't perfectly clear. Make sure every passage and jet is squeaky clean and that float level is set properly when reassembling. Before you take a carb apart, turn each adjustment screw in while you count the turns until it is lightly seated. Note that setting so you can set the needles exactly the same upon reassembly. Note the position of each carb on the engine. They are not always interchangeable.
