They can be messy. When a little fuel is splattered around, like when the engine sneezes, it dries off and leaves the oil behind. In the North, a lot of guys spray down the entire engine with WD40 to limit water damage from condensation. It's an oily mess, but it seems to keep the spring electrical breakdowns under control.

I don't know about the wd-40, never tried it. The oil is normal accumulation. If you run the engine at idle with the silencer off you'll be able to see a very slight mist caused by the vortex of air around the carb. This is where your oil is comming from. Wipe the silencer down and the lower cowl area as part of your regular maintenance.

Will do its also pretty hard to steer I lubed up all the grease fittings it turns smooth but real hard to turn I don't know if that engine is too big to not have hydralic steering?

The old Mercury wiring would deteriorate. 80's and later don't seem to. I said some spray the whole thing down with WD40. I spray a little on the starter drive and flywheel area is all.

A common mistake is to force grease into the steering. If it's dual cable, and there's a zerk on the front tube, it'll get into the cable. The cable is not lubricated with grease, but with a light oil, and grease will jam it up.

I have Morse dual cable NFB steering on mine, and I can steer it at the dock with one finger. Under way, of course, I have to overcome a little crabwalking engine torque.

It is possible to clean and relubricate the cables. We dealt with it at length over on Scream and Fly.

Yikes. I just checked mine out, did compression check, carb and fuel pump kits, new fiberglass reeds, and all timing and linkage adjustments. Also put impelller, wear plate, and gaskets in the water pump. Cost about $200 in parts. 115 of that was reeds.

Major LU work goes to the shop. Cost me about $400 to have it put right, including all the seals and most of the bearings when I first got it. Done right and kept away from impact and rototilling incidents, it'll last a long time. XR4 is a bit touchy. It's small for the power, so first indication of a missed clearance adjustment is usually the pinion out the side.
