Mercury BigFoot slams into gear

We have a 2002 40hp Mercury 4 stoke Big Foot. When pushing the throttle in forward or reverse it seems to "slam" in gear...it isn't smooth like it used to be. Any ideas on what could be causing this? I worry we will do dmage if we continue to use it like that.

try checking the control linkages 1st and make sure the throttle isn't opening just before you go into gear? Could just be minor adjustment needed.
