I recently purchased a 18 foot forester with a Mercury 90hp 1985 inline 6. Seemed like it ran well hooked to water cups & idling. Took it out for the first time Monday & was heading out at slow speed. Seemed fine till I tried to open it up. It bogged down after half throttle & was I could feel it wanting to kick in & go but it only did it in 1-2 second spurts. I thought maybe I had bad gas or a bad mix so I cleaned out the tank, refilled it with 91 octane & the recommended 2 cycle oil, silver i believe. Changed the fuel filter & cleaned out the lines. Now it seems to have a miss while idling. Changed out the spark plugs, pulled the boots back & checked for spark jump. Upon further inspection found 2 yellow wires to the rectifier electrical taped. Peeled back the tape and found 2 burned wires. Any thoughts on what this could be or how to test it properly? Could it be the Stator, Trigger or Switchbox thats gone bad? I did notice that one switchbox has been replaced already.
