hi, we have an 85hp mercury outboard and always have trouble starting it.
but when it goes to the shop (twice) it starts right up, so it must be us.

this is what we do, we pump the bulb till it gets hard, push the lever by the
throttle forward and then press the choke button. and all it does is turn
over, not start. are we supposed to hold the choke button in, ( it clicks
when you hit it) or just click once?

------------------
donna3s

Donna3

I have a mercury and I will tell you how I start mine. Pump the blub like you decribed, after the bulb is hard I put the lever in the fast idel postion. It sounds like the same thing you do so far. The only thing I do from this point, is I roll the motor over than I push in on the key to hit the choke. If it does not kick I hit it again. I always fires up with this method.
Maybe you are holding in on the choke before you roll it over? Do you think you are flooding it and that is why it does not start? All motor are a little different, so try it and see what happens.

markcv

Re: mercury 90 hp

You dont say what year. Some old mercs were bears to start. Cranking speed on the battery may not fast enough to draw fuel into the carb throats. It took a fresh battery to start my old merc 90. Also must be vertical, else fuel would drip out front of carb.

I forgot to ask,

Do they use your fuel and tank, or their own supply? It may be worthwhile to try a different tank, and fuel line to see if you have the same problem.

I have a 84 merc 80hp. Pump the bulb to you hear first swish of fuel at the pump. roll over the engine once or twice, then push control lever to about 1" from neutral. turn key while also pushing in, to engage choke, when engine fires continue holding choke until engine rpm starts to drop, let go of choke, then reapply choke, then let go again. Engine should continue then. Thats what I do , Hopfully it'll work for ya. Goodluck.
