just bought this boat. Has a 1996 90 hp mercury outboard. The shifter was VERY stiff. We adjusted the knob on top of the shifter and now the shifter is very smooth, however it will no longer shift into neutral or reverse. What did we screw up ?

What shifter? The remote control?

Take the remote cables off the engine. With the throttle at idle, slowly slide (attempt to slide) the shift arm thru FNR while rotating the prop by hand.....required to get into R. If that won't work, get back on here.

let me attempt to clarify. First, the boat did shift to FNR when we got it home. Since then, we had to take the motor off to do some work in the transom. Put the motor back on and now the shifter (next to the steering wheel) will o to FNR, but the prop always stays in forward., All we have done is disconnect the battery, remove the motor, replace same motor, adjust the shift tension, reconnect the battery and now the prop stays in forward even when we shift to neutral or reverse.

Ok heres your problem. There is a cam in the rear of the gear case. what has happend is, the bearing race has slide to the rear causing the cam to be stuck in forward. you must take apart the gear case and replace the rear shaft bearing to solve that issue.

(It just happend to me) lol Let me know if that fixes your problem
