Mercury 9.9 thermostat/circulation issue

I have a 9.9, 2stroke. I am having an issue with water circulation. Thermostat in, very little pee. Thermostat out, pees a stream across the room. Since water is obviously getting to the power head with no problems, I have done the obvious and snaked out and blown out the pee hole port in the thermostat housing...Same symtoms. Failing a solution to the lack of cirulation with the thermostat in, can this little engine do OK with no thermostat? I've never had one of these heads off, so I am not quite confident enough to just try it.
Thanks, in advance for any advice!!!

Re: Mercury 9.9 thermostat/circulation issue

If youre running on a hose and muffs and the supply water is very cold, that sputter is about all you may get.If you raise the rpms(A LITTLE),it should pick up a bit.You can get a fairly cheap point/shoot temp reader and check for proper temp,or,just hold a thermometer into pee stream(if enough)and check temp of it.It really may just be the normal operation, but dont mess around w/it.Keep an eye on the temp until you determine its ok.Running on lake and higher rpms will ultimately determine if things are ok.It should stream MUCH better on the water. You should now, however, have cloudy water coming out of prop(end)even if "pee"isnt going strong.

Sounds like the thermostat is not functioning. I would not think that they are too expensive - I would recommend replacing it with a new one considering what a rebuild would cost if the motor is damaged. As far as running the motor without one - I've wondered the same thing myself but I always come back to the fact that the designers put it there for a reason. Good luck.
