I am looking into a new motor for my Starcraft sixteen foot F/S. The lakes I primarily fish are limited HP. After talking with a marina over the winter he mentioned the High Output 9.9 from Mercury. He told me the motors were designed primarily for a pontoon boat on these limited HP lakes. Does anyone have any experience with these motors? Are they worth the extra twenty percent in cost versus the extra power. I have to keep in mind that my hull weight is rated up to 80 HP so I am not going to move very fast anyway. How does the motor rate versus say a 15 hp? I appreciate any feedback

Re: Mercury 9.9 High Output 4-strokes

Howdy, Joe.

Your friend must have been referring to the "Bigfoot" Merc. It has a lower gear ratio and a larger diameter prop for heavy loading.

It has no more hp than any other 9.9.

With a boat rated to 80hp on a "<10" lake I would like a 4 stroke. It wouldn't be any faster, but it would be quieter and smoother, make no smell or noise, and use a LOT less fuel. All reasons for the <10 limit in the first place.

Good luck. :)
