I have a newer manual starting 9.9 HP 4 stroke (2014) I read somewhere that I can get like a 6 amp charge from the motor to my trolling battery but I don't see any provision for this. I am assuming that I would have had to buy the electric start version to get the charging feature?

You can always add a charging circuit. But keep in mind you don't get that 6 amps unless your are running higher RPMs.

I am assuming that without the electric start it does not have a charging system?

not sure on yours, but some smaller engines came with "lighting coils". Use your serial number and check for under flywheel parts...

On Mercs you normally need the electric start version to have factory installed charging coils, Most Honda and Yamahas have charging systems in place, it just needs to be hooked up. Find the part number for the coils and then look on eBay, you may find one at a good price, I have. You will need a rectifier too, you can get one from Radio Shack for about $5.00.
