I really need some help here, i brought a engine which ive been assured that was running but i cannot get it running. When i pull the pull start after many attempts it will burst into life for a split second and then cut out!

What is the problem? im using fresh fuel and correct mix.

The markings on the tiller have worn away so i cannot see where the coreect strating postion is, does anybody no how much throttle and choke it will need?

Ive been told to squirt some easy start down carb mouth to see if it works, im new to outboards so where is the carb mouth?

any pictures or help would be very much apprecaited.

thank you all

There are 3 major things you need to verify before attemping to start:

Fuel Supply- Make sure you are using a trusted fuel supply like a clean portable take with fresh and treated fuel/oil mix.

Compression- Do a compression test to make sure you are balanced between cylinders and is high enough to fire the fuel mixure entering the cylinder.

Spark- Do a spark test with either a spark gap tester or using a grounded plug. All tools can be had for fairly cheap at a discount tool store like harbor freight.

If any of these are missing or untrusted you will pull your arm out trying to start it. Let us know how the tests come out.

Try adjusting the carburator idle adjustment screw, then check the fuel pump, see if its clean. Got the vent open to the gas tank?

Compression is good.

The fuel is fresh and i made sure the 2 stroke oil was added properly.

I will check spark and clean plugs.

What is the correct start postion for the outboard does it need any throttle?

Are you sure it's a 1976? I thought the red band motors were from 1968 to 1971!

With the cowl off look at the throttle engagement as you twist the handle. You are looking for it to only advance the timing, not crack the butterfly on the carburator. Idle to off-idle is controlled by timing advance of the trigger. Use full choke and fully advanced idle timing to start. If the timing screws have been adjusted or messed with them you may need to go through the entire timing set procedure. The idle screw is supposed to be set 1 1/2 turns out from slightly seated to establish a starting point.

The serial number is 2801169. Its a mercury 9.8hp thunderbolt. I think it is 1976 but could be wrong.

thanks

You have a early point CD ign. system either the points are bad or the insulator blocks on the point studs are shorting, the insulator blocks need to be repaced when ever the points are changed and if not you will have spark but the engine will not start, in some cases the engine will kick while cranking it.

The points may be purchased at Mercury or Sierra retailers and the insulator blocks through CDI Electronics

Right ive spent all day toady trying to get it to go. Still no luck.

I took out plugs cleaned them up, replaced the leads. I checked the spark and im getting a good strong spark. Used new fresh fuel. Also cleaned the fuel filter.

After many pulls it finally fired up and ran for about 2-3seconds but soon as you touched the throttle or choke it cut out and then its really hard try and get it to fire again!

What does problem sound like it could be? still the points? where about will if find the points?
