Thank You Bear, the motor looks like it hasn't been used much just scraped up a bit.
I am not joking I can't get the cover off.
Maybe its stuck or I am easily confused?
Wanted to winterize it.

Re: Mercury 9.8 Year?

Look on the inside of the lift handgrip on the rear of the cowling. On the inside of the two parallel struts that extend to the hand grip, there should be cleverly hidden tabs. Just squeeze or push them up and the cowling should release. You will feel them before you see them.

If those two tabs are not inside the hand grip on the back of the cowling, get a flash light, even in broad daylight and inspect the side of the cowling where it mounts to the engine. If you find a tab, there will be another one on the other side. Push up or sideways on them and the cowling should release.

If you still cannot find the tabs, Email or fax Mercury with your serial number. Include a phone number and in a day or two, somebody will respond.

The cowling does not come off from the front. The silver inspection plate is bolted on and is cosmetic, not functional, other than to let air in to the carb.

Thank you jackc,it was as you said 2 big levers underneath the handle.
It looks very clean and the throttle linkage is even greased.
The spark plug wires look original though.
Tim
